Georgia Justice Project (GJP) invites you to be part of our Pathways Over Probation campaign to build awareness of how individuals can terminate their Georgia felony probation sentences early.
Georgia leads the nation in the number of people per capita on probation. Did you know that our probation sentences are three times longer than the national average? Almost half of states cap their probation sentences at a few years, but in Georgia 40% of our probation sentences are longer than 10 years.
It’s very common in Georgia for someone to transition to Non-Report / Inactive / Unsupervised probation after 2-3 years, but not reporting does NOT mean off paper. A person may have reduced reporting requirements and be able to travel out of state without permission, but ALL other conditions of probation remain in place even on unsupervised or non-report status. And an ongoing probation sentence can prolong barriers to some job, housing or educational opportunities.
Since the law passed, more than 20,000 people have had their probation sentences terminated early. But many more can take advantage of this opportunity, and we want your help in reaching them. We can offer you resources and hope you will help us spread the word.
We would love to invite you to Know Your Rights on Probation & How to Seek Early Termination at Barred Business’s next monthly Know Your Rights Forum on Thursday, May 22nd 11am-1pm the Dunbar Center (477 Windsor St. SW, Atlanta, GA 30312). Register here.
